Start a new Claude chat. Begin with context before asking for the document:
I'm a purchasing agent at a [company type, e.g., mid-size food manufacturer]. I need to create a category strategy document for our [category name, e.g., packaging materials] spend.
Category data:
- Annual spend: $[amount]
- Current vendors: [number] (top vendor: [name] at $[amount])
- Key items: [list 3-5 main products/services]
- Current contracts: [open PO / annual contracts / no contracts]
- Main pain points: [price volatility / limited supplier options / quality inconsistency / etc.]
- Strategic importance: [critical / important / indirect]
Create a one-page category strategy document following the Kraljic matrix positioning framework.

If you need to present this to leadership, ask: "Convert this to a 5-slide presentation outline I can build in PowerPoint. Include one slide each for: current state, market analysis, recommended strategy, savings opportunity, and action plan."
Standard category strategy:
Create a category strategy for [category] at a [company type]. Spend: $[amount], vendors: [number]. Pain points: [list]. Recommend: sourcing approach, contract structure, and savings target.
Market analysis only:
Provide a market analysis for the [category] supply market in the US. Include: major suppliers, pricing drivers, market concentration, and trends that affect buyer leverage.
Savings opportunity brief:
What savings range is realistic from a competitive rebid of [category] spend of $[amount]? What are the key levers (consolidation, volume, contract length, payment terms)?
Kraljic positioning:
Using the Kraljic matrix, position [category] for a [company type]. Spend: $[amount], supply complexity: [high/low]. What does the recommended sourcing strategy look like for this position?
